Originally known as Nuits, or Nuits-sous-Beaune, the name of its finest vineyard, Les St Georges, was added to the town in the nineteenth century to become Nuits-Saint-Georges. Many fine Premier Cru vineyards can be found in this region.
The wine is produced in the monopole vineyard "Clos des Grandes Vignes" on the southern sector of Nuits-St-Georges around Premeaux. Under the control of Domaine du Chateau de Puligny-Montrachet, only old vines were used for the bottling of this organic and biodynamic premier cru wine.
The soil in Clos des Grandes Vignes is based on limestone, well-drained with slightly higher amounts of sand than neighbouring sites. This encouraged deep root growth, resulting in healthier vines and higher quality berries. The site enjoys plentiful sunlight exposure, aiding the grape ripening process for slightly earlier harvests.
This wine is light-medium bodied with interesting herbal and brambly overtones. 50% whole bunch fermentation took place during production, presenting the wine with fine tannins and a dark, brooding character. It is dry and has a powerful, richly fruited finish. This bottle is ready to drink now or shelved for special occasions over the next few years.
Nuits-Saint-Georges is amongst the powerhouses of the Cotes de Nuits, and Pinot Noir are pretty versatile food wines, capable of taking on a range of dishes
Have it with Porcini mushroom ravioli in brown butter, or Lamb with a cherry-olive jus, and the bright acidity will help to cut through the fatty richness and the complex flavours of these dishes. Going Italian with a Veal saltimbocca (veal with sage and prosciutto) or more rustic with a pheasant casserole is also a great match.
And finally, you can called out for roast game, like chicken with truffles or duck. There aren’t many better pairings than Pinot Noir and duck. Seared or roasted duck breast with a fruity sauce paired with this Nuit-Saint-Georges 1er Cru “Clos des Grandes Vignes” will take you directly to heaven.
