The Wine

At the heart of the Côte Chalonnaise (12km from Chalon-sur-Saône), Mercurey is one of the most important wine appellations of Burgundy. Protected from the wet winds by surrounding hills, vineyards extend over to the village of Saint Martin sous Montaigu. The soils to the east contains characteristics of limestone and marl (mud rich in calcium carbonate), whereas a Jurassic-crystalline basement structure with sandstone covers the west.

Emile Voarick, the former mayor of St-Martin sous Montaigu (1959-1982), was the founder of the Domaine. Domaine Voarick now belongs to the Michel Picard family, owner of the Chateau de Chassagne Montrachet - a beautiful castle with cellars dating back to the 11th and 14th centuries in Burgundy.

Tasting Notes

A deep ruby red colour, this Burgundy Premier Cru evokes red fruit aromas - raspberries, strawberries and cherries. With age, accents on the undergrowth is given to the wine, providing spicy aromas of tobacco and cocoa beans. In the mouth, the wine is fleshy and round, balancing fruitiness with minerality.

Food Pairing

A delightful match with lightly-seasoned roasts of chicken or duck. Fish dishes include fatty selections, such as salmon, served either pan seared to retain the fish's natural fat or grilled to add a slight smoky flavour.
