The Pic St.Loup appellation is found in the hills some 20 km north of Montpellier. Whilst many of the pretty villages on the drive up from the city have been tamed and ‘gentrified’ into dormitory settlements , there remains a sense of wildness cramming in from the fringes, and this becomes more readily apparent when the dramatic crags of Pic St.Loup and the Montagne de l’Hortus come into view.
Between two limestone cliffs, among overgrown vines and ancient olive trees, Jean Orliac and his wife Marie-Thérèse discovered the neglected property that would one day become the Domaine L'Hortus--the Latin word for Garden. The Loup Dans La Bergerie is their cuvee made for a perfect everyday go-to wine, with grapes all grown organically.
This red is fresh and lively, with cherry and plum fruit spiked by hints of zesty white pepper, underlying black tea, stone and spice notes. Myrtle and forest –floor aromas are matched on the palate by a weight of black fruit which is poised and gently peppery.
